A Piece of My Mind

To everyone who is glorifying the mall santa who used a few words in sign language to communicate to a Deaf (deaf?) boy: stop. Please, just stop. 
I think it’s wonderful that someone knew sign language and used it to communicate with this little boy, don’t get me wrong. But if every time some hearing person uses a few signs we put it on the news and applaud it all over the internet instead of, i don’t know, deciding to learn some signs yourself or becoming more aware that Deaf people live in a world of audism and restricted access, then we aren’t going anywhere. 
Stop glorifying hearing people who “stoop to the level of those poor deaf kids.”
Don’t be inspired to “awwww” at a Deaf person, be inspired to connect with the people in your our world who are different.
